The Moonflower Project represents a pioneering leap into a new paradigm of publishing, where the vivid imaginations behind great novels are brought to life through advanced AI artistry. This innovative model merges the essence of storytelling with the boundless creativity of artificial intelligence to create art collections derived directly from the narrative depths of literature. Through the innovation of blockchain technology and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT's), these collections offer readers and fans of literature a chance to actually own a piece of the inner world of their most cherished stories. Chosen as the genesis of this novel approach, 'In Search of the Return - Courting the Magic of the Dreamscape' by Joshua Raymond serves as a perfect example. The Moonflower Project showcases the ability of AI to capture and interpret the rich, descriptive language of a novel into a visual feast, setting a precedent for future literary works to follow. In the near future, this approach is poised to redefine how book covers and literary art are created, making 'In Search of the Return' not just a book but a beacon for a new era in publishing.
The primary purpose of the project was indeed to find the perfect book cover for Raymond's novel, which was chosen as a test case for the theory behind the project's vision, which sought to showcase the power of the AI systems to analyze, understand, and create epic imagery from complex and colorful prose. In Search of the Return was chosen specifically for its depth of narrative and the challenge that it presented to the AI both linguistically and graphically. After many months of work, a final selection was made for the cover art, and the full set of alternative images was deployed on the Stargaze NFT platform for open trading. The project officially launched on March 27th, 2024, but has been in the works since late 2023.
The Moonflower Project aims to redefine storytelling by infusing literature with digital art, creating a unique and immersive experience for art enthusiasts and book lovers alike. Ownership of all imagery created through the project was retained by the author, and proceeds from sales of NFT artwork goes to the author exclusively, and remains under his control. The project itself was not premised on payment for services, but as a mutual exploration of the author's search for an epic book cover, and the testing of the project's goals and limitations for future business offerings.
Project methodology involved submitting the entirety of the novel to the AI system, followed by discussions with the AI about its understandings of the novel's themes and deeper meaning, and likely scenes from the book that might make strong cover art. The AI was then asked to work through each of its identified scenes one at a time, beginning with "Dreamwoods Genesis" and progressing through the other sub-projects as described elsewhere. Over 4000 images were created, and 1500 were chosen for inclusion in the publication of The Moonflower Project NFT collection (MOONFLWR). Most of the images not included were specifically excluded due to substantial errors of one form or another, such as legs attached backwards, or other grotesque abnormalities. However, there are still hundreds of images that could be later published as a second cut, but no plans have been made to do so as of the time of publication of the main collection, which will never be added to directly, as this is an impossibility technically speaking. There can only ever be 1500 original Moonflower Project NFT's, creating rarity and value for the collection in the digital era.
Among the files omitted from the collection, there are undoubtedly a few gems, and though these could be published separately, they can never be part of the original collection. This is a technical impossibility given the nature of the NFT's themselves. All files published in the original collection were enhanced by generative AI following their original creation by other AI systems, but few had changes of any substantive nature. The most common fix applied was for flaws in the iris of the eye. However, extra or missing fingers or toes, or heterochromatic eyes were understood to be part of the variable nature of the AI's vision of beauty, as these matters were discussed more than once with the AI, and yet the trend to include these anomalies persisted, often without negative effect, and in the case of heterochromatic eyes, sometimes with brilliant results.
The project itself was one defined by technical exploration and artistic aspiration, and as such, the process is not economically viable for most authors at the scale it was pursued here. However, the project does anticipate further work on other novels, but under different names. After all, the project itself was named after the AI's own infatuation with the spiritual transformation of the co-protagonist Aiyana as she found herself falling into the light of the moon.
